Luke Bryan wanted to “clear the air” about rumors that he falls on stage because he’s been drinking.

Bryan caught up with Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday evening (May 6), catching up with the comedian about his mother, an unusual allergy, American Idol, and hoping that his 2020 single “One Margarita” will become a Cinco de Mayo anthem.

“I’m a little worried about you,” Kimmel told Bryan. “You seem to be falling down a lot.”

Kimmel showed a compilation of several videos recorded by fans attending Bryan’s concerts over the years. Most recently, Bryan took a tumble on stage in Canada. Videos circulated of the moment the “Love You, Miss You, Mean It” artist falling backward on stage and landing on a concertgoer’s phone. Bryan has since said he fell because the stage was “slick.” He reiterated to Kimmel that he believes his water bottle spilled and caused him to lose his footing. Then, Bryan decided to “clear the air” about some rumor’s he’s read from commenters online.

“First of all, everybody — you check the comments (and see) the fans talking about the fall, and there’s nine out of 10 comments that point to me being drunk,” Bryan said. “No (I wasn’t drunk). But this is my chance to clear the air on this ‘drinking and falling’ (allegation). Listen. I’m 6’2’’, I’m up there trying to do Michael Jackson moves in too big of a frame, and when you add water to a stage in slick cowboy boots you go down hard. It’s not alcohol, fans! It is not alcohol. People are assuming. You just can’t drink a bottle of vodka and go do a two-hour show.

“If you’re gonna be stupid, you gotta be tough. I am that,” Bryan added later. “So, somehow I’ve dodged injury and I can’t predict when it will happen again.”
