Kassi Ashton Reflects On How The Pandemic Changed Course of Career

Kassi Ashton stopped by The Bobby Bones Show to celebrate her debut album coming out, shared how the pandemic changed the course of her career and more!

Back in 2019 and early 2020, things were taking off in Ashton’s career, then everything came to a stop because of the pandemic. For a year and a half, she did not do anything because they didn’t want to promote her over Zoom. After that, she felt like she had to start from scratch again and prove herself to her label. But it was a blessing in disguise because it made her realize who she was and the sound she wanted to create. The music she was making before she would not be excited to show some of her favorite artists, so she stopped being what people told her to be and started being who she wanted to be and made sure her music represented that. Ashton is from California, Missouri, a small town with about 4,400 people. Her parents had very different lifestyles. Her mom put her on every stage and beauty pageant and her dad would take her fishing and motorcycle riding. It’s hard for some people to grasp that she can be into two very different things, but she’s living proof that you can be, and it works.

Her debut album, Made From The Dirt, is a product of fate, timing, luck, grease, tears, work, love and never taking no for an answer. Releasing nearly a decade after she first signed her record deal, the album is largely autobiographical, and the songs tell the story of her life from the last few years. “Called Crazy” is about men who keep coming back to women they call crazy. “The Straw,” is a song she wrote seven years ago when she went through a breakup after experiencing “the final straw.” Before she plays it, she always says, “If you’re the person in a relationship who is always doing everything and there is no change, this is for you.” She hopes the song gives people the courage to leave if they find themselves in a similar situation.

While in studio, Ashton played “Called Crazy” and “The Straw” live. Made From the Dirt is out now!
