On The Bobby Bones Show, Bobby shared a story about an auction he recently bid on through SJ Tuohy, who works as the Assistant to the Regional Athletic Director aka Deputy at Oral Roberts University.
SJ had set up an auction where one of the prizes was a “Broadcaster for a Day” experience for an upcoming basketball game in Oklahoma. The winner would get to sit court-side with the team’s official play-by-play announcer, calling the game right beside him, a dream experience for any sports fan. When Bobby heard about it, he decided to place a bid. Tuohy shared that he might have “strongly encouraged” others not to bid against him so Bobby could win.
The experience was originally meant for a younger person, someone “of the youthful nature,” as SJ put it, though in the past, even older fans had participated and loved it. Bobby then had a better idea. Instead of taking the spot just for himself, he asked if he could pay double so that a kid could have the experience as well. Bobby offered to donate $1,000 to make it happen. SJ loved the idea, saying it was a “win for everyone.” A local kid from the Boys & Girls Club will now get the full broadcaster experience, sitting courtside, calling plays, and learning what it’s like behind the mic.
Even the team’s current broadcaster, Connor, who’s only 23, was nervous when he heard Bobby would be joining him. “This guy’s a pro… this is a bad look for me,” he joked.
