Kelly Clarkson Reveals The Moment She Knew She Had To File For Divorce

Kelly Clarkson wanted happiness for herself, as well as husband Brandon Blackstock, and that’s part of the reason why the American Idol alum filed for divorce.

In the singer’s full discussion with Untamed author Glennon Doyle and Alicia Keys on her talk show, Clarkson spoke in-depth about her big decision to file for divorce from her husband of almost seven years. "You write about the fallout from your divorce — I'm obviously going through one right now. It's horrible. There are so many hard parts," the singer told Doyle of her decision to divorce Craig Melton before finding love with soccer star Abby Wambach.

"The hardest for me is the kids," Clarkson continued during the 13-minute segment. "I think, as women especially, we're trained to take it all on and deal with it and you're fine. But it's your babies that you worry about."

Doyle agreed with Clarkson's take, adding a different perspective on how motherhood is intertwined in the decision. "We've all been trained to believe a good mother is a liar. I didn't leave a marriage in spite of being a good mother; I left because I am a good mother,” she replied.

Clarkson went on to confess that the sentiment is what she "needed to see to make a step in [her] life." "Not just for me, but for my current husband," the singer confessed. "I'm like, 'This isn't happiness, for both of us, you know? I feel both of us deserve better, and neither one of us would want this for our children."

Clarkson, who was recently awarded primary custody of their two children, River Rose, and Remington, was hit with an "unreasonable" amount of spousal and child support from Blackstock. The talent manager is seeking $436,000 a month.
