Keith Urban recently had an in-depth conversation with award-winning guitarist and producer Dann Huff.
Urban and Huff had a nearly two-hour discussion about music, inspiration, connecting with live audiences, reflected on earlier moments in the country star’s career, guitars, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and more. Huff noted that the interview was recorded on January 2. It published on January 11. They closed the interview by asking one another, “what are you working on right now as a person?”
“Guitar-wise, I’d like to work on playing less,” Urban said. “Don't play the next two notes I was about to play. That would be good. Have confidence that that one that you're playing right now is more than enough and let it sit for a second. And to just be aware that I’m aware. That I’m none of the voices in my head. I'm just the one listening because it simplifies everything and brings it right back to a very simple, calm, steady, grounded place. But it’s a constant process. And I've realized that that's part of it too is um, being awake is not the goal. Awakening is where it all is. …As a friend of mine says, just work on how you introduce yourself to the day, and I thought that was an absolutely beautiful phrase. He said to me, ‘how do you introduce yourself to the day every day?’ I thought, ‘oh my gosh, I love that. I love that.’ He goes, ‘you get to do it every day.’
“Simplifying is my journey this year,” Urban said. Find the full interview here (warning: language).
Some reports have noted that this marks Urban's first interview to publish after finalizing his divorce. Urban and ex-wife Nicole Kidman finalized their divorce on January 6, ending a nearly 20-year marriage. The couple met in 2005 at a gala in Los Angeles, California. They got married the following year in Sydney, Australia. Kidman cited “irreconcilable differences” when she filed for divorce on September 30, following a summer of separation. Kidman and Urban share daughters Sunday Rose Kidman-Urban, 17, and Faith Margaret Kidman-Urban, 15, who will stay with Kidman most of the year. The actress and the country star reportedly agreed to make significant decisions about their children together, both waived rights to child and spousal support, and divided property and assets. Kidman and Urban have not publicly addressed the divorce as of publication time.
