Best Movies of the 2000s According to Movie Mike

The 2000’s were a time of Razr phones, DVD towers and low-rise jeans. They were also a great time for movies. I wanted to take a look at what I believe to be the best movies of the decade released between 2000-2009. For my list, I decided to not include any franchises, superhero, animated, or Christmas movies. I feel like those movies speak for themselves and wanted to get a look outside of those movies which would be a list all of their own.

5. Pineapple Express (2008)

2000’s were a great year for comedies and if there was one guy I wanted to see in this genre…it would be Seth Rogen. This is Seth Rogen and James Franco at their comedic best. Adding in a great supporting cast with Danny McBride and Craig Robinson…I believe the only thing missing from this movie was Jonah Hill.

My favorite quote: "They say don't dip the pen in company ink. I'm totally glad I dipped my pen in your ink, bro."

Honorable mentions for 2000’s comedies: Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin, The Hangover and Wedding Crashers.

4. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

My personal favorite Quentin Tarantino film. I find myself to be oddly fascinated by WW2 and loved the way Tarantino rewrote history in this movie. I laughed, I cried and found myself cheering at the screen by the end of it all.

My favorite quote: “Gorlami!”

Honorable mentions for 2000’s war movies: The Hurt Locker, Black Hawk Down and Jarhead.

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

This was the first movie that made me feel. I was 13 years old and probably unable to understand what that kind of relationship meant…but I knew how it made me feel. From the special effects, cinematography and editing…everything about this movie makes it unique to watch. I also love the prompt the movie created: If you could erase an ex….would you?

My favorite quote: "Why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the least bit of attention?"

Honorable mentions for 2000’s dramas: Catch Me If You Can, American Psycho, and Little Miss Sunshine.

2. Juno (2007)

2000’s movies were all about the quotes! I remember watching Juno in order to understand everyone sharing quotes in the high school hallways and on their Myspace pages. Juno is also one of the most rewatchable movies of the 2000’s paired with a unique soundtrack.

My favorite quote: "Can you just hold on for a second, I'm on my hamburger phone."

Honorable mentions for 2000’s quotable movies: Napoleon Dynamite, Superbad and Mean Girls.

1. No Country for Old Men (2007)

The movie that made me love movies as a teenager. I remember watching this movie for the first time and it felt like it was what I had been searching for the entire time. Anton Chigurh is one of the best villains in cinematic history. His stoic presence and sinister demeanor makes for a ruthless depiction of a low-key, stone cold killer. Javier Bardem’s win for Best Supporting Actor was well deserved.

My favorite quote: "Don't put it in your pocket, sir. Don't put it in your pocket. It's your lucky quarter....Anywhere not in your pocket, where it will get mixed in with the others and become just a coin, which it is."

Honorable mentions for 2000’s Oscar worthy movies: Training Day, The Dark Knight, and Into the Wild.
