Movie Mike on Why ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Is the Perfect Summer Film

Thor: Love and Thunder was my number 1 most anticipated movie of the summer and oftentimes that leads to disappointment. However, that was not the case as the movie lived up to all my expectations even as a diehard Marvel fan.

The part Rom-Com, part Greek Mythology made for a great summer movie. The constant laughs and big fight sequences made for another great Thor adventure who I feel is an underrated character in the Marvel universe. Chris Hemsworth found his stride as Thor in the previous film Ragnarok and continues that in Love and Thunder. Not only is his comedic timing impeccable but his body is shredded beyond belief which is equally as impressive as his acting chops. I loved the return of Natalie Portman and felt we finally got the best version of her character Jane Foster. I enjoyed the “will they, won’t they '' love story line. And Christian Bale as Gorr The God Butch was the villian this franchise needed to take it to the next level. While he’s no Thanos, he posed a real threat to Thor and New Asgard.

Taika Watiti returns as director who has been able to shift the mood in the Thor franchise by making the visuals and characters more fun and lighthearted. The franchise has benefited by not taking itself seriously and also by shifting focus on what makes each character great. It’s the most fleshed out comedic and emotional characters we’ve seen in Marvel’s Phase 4. The movie also does a great job of resetting all the major plot points you would need to know if you haven’t seen the previous Thor movies. The only let down was that the movie was under 2 hours long. I felt the first act was a little all over the place as the story found its footing. I would have loved to see a little more development early in the story to even out the pacing of the rest of the film.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 Storm Breakers. Listen to this episode below!
