Margaret Newsum normally has a caregiver with her at most times, except when they have to leave for the day. This wouldn't be an issue, except the California wildfires began to threaten her home.
Since no one was with her and she was unable to leave on her own, she sat on her front porch hoping help would drive by. Waste Management driver Dane Ray Cummings was wanting to finish his route despite his supervisor asking him to stop working because of the fires. Thankfully, he kept working. He shared with news outlet KCCI, "I been on that route eight years, and I just picked the people that I knew were older, and I tried to stop and help them. She was my last stop. I probably went to 45 or 50 people to see if I could help them."
Cummings broke company rules and loaded Newsum into his big, green garbage truck. They were together in it for about five hours as other people evacuated the area. Although the Camp Fire never reached her home, she was thankful to get out in time to be safe. All thanks to his garbage man.
