During “On This Day In Country Music” on The Bobby Bones Show we talk about songs that were actually covers or recorded by someone else first. Mike D did some research to find what famous country songs were actually originally covers. Here are five country songs that you might not know were covers:
1. Chris Stapleton - "Millionaire"
Originally written and recorded as the title track to Kevin Welch’s 2002 solo release. Welch earned a string of charting singles in the late 1980s and early '90s, but got his start as a songwriter in the late '70s. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded Dead Reckoning Records with, among others, Tammy Rogers and Mike Henderson, two of Stapleton's former bandmates in the SteelDrivers.
2. Reba McEntire - "Fancy"
"Fancy" is a song written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1969. In 1991, Reba McEntire took the song to number eight on the Billboard Country charts. McEntire also produced a popular music video for the song, expanding on the song's storyline.
3. Brooks and Dunn - "My Maria"
“My Maria" is a song co-written by B. W. Stevenson and Daniel Moore. Stevenson released "My Maria" as a single in August 1973, and the song became a Top 10 hit, peaking at number 9 on the US pop chart. Brooks & Dunn released a cover version of "My Maria" in 1996, the song reached number 1 on the U.S. Country Chart.
4. Blake Shelton - "Ol' Red"
The song was originally recorded by George Jones on his 1990 album You Oughta Be Here with Me. Blake Shelton released his version in March 2002 as the third and final single from his self-titled debut album.
5. LeAnn Rimes - "Blue"
"Blue" is a song released in 1958 by Bill Mack, who was a songwriter/country artist and country radio disc jockey. The song won Mack the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. LeAnn Rimes first recorded the song when she was 11 years old, for her 1994 independent album All That. She then re-recorded the song for her debut album, Blue, in 1996 when she was 13. She won the 1996 Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
