Amy's Pile: The Thanksgiving Foods You Can & Can't Travel With

If you're one of the millions of people traveling this season for Thanksgiving, then this is something you might need to know.

With Thanksgiving comes many, many leftovers or items to help with the Thanksgiving meal. So whether you're carrying ingredients, or leftovers, you need to be aware of what's allowed in your bag if you're traveling by plane.

To avoid having food not tossed at airport security checkpoints, make sure your item falls on the 'can travel' list instead of the 'can't travel list' below.

TSA's press secretary Jenny L. Burke said,

"The general rule we tend to tell people is that if you can spray it, spread it, pump it, or pour it, it should go in your checked bag."
  • Cheese: hard times like sharp cheddar are good to go, but creamy cheeses like brie or burrata are treated like liquids.
  • Meats: allowed through airport security.
  • Carving tools: not allowed in your luggage
  • Mashed potatoes: If they're mashed-up solids, you're good to go.
  • Gravy: It's a liquid, so you're only allowed to bring 3.4 ounces.
  • Green bean casserole: They will make it through security checkpoints.
  • Stuffing: Treated as a solid, so you're good to go.
  • Cranberry sauce: Needs to be packed, because it's more like liquid.
  • Pie: Despite being more gel-like, you're good to bring on board.
