Megan Moroney called into The Bobby Bones Show to talk about her new record, how touring with Kenny Chesney is going and more!
Moroney’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Am I Okay? is officially out, but don’t let the title fool you, she is doing more than okay. She was playing a show in Idaho the night it was released and ran backstage to find out how fans were reacting to the songs. She was nervous for people to hear “The Girls,” a song she wrote about her best friends, but it’s already become a viral TikTok trend. That song, along with “Indifferent” and “28th of June” she wrote all on the same day. She shared that the ideas were just flowing that day but admitted that by the time she wrote the final song her brain was what she called “cold soup” which meant she was fatigued, and it was time to stop. Between her last album, Lucky, that came out in May 2023, to when she started working on her new record, she wrote about 30 songs, but she wasn’t necessarily writing in mind for the album. She was just writing songs about her life and when it came time to start putting together the new album, she picked 14 songs that she felt fit the theme the best and made it sound cohesive. When she wrote the title track “Am I Okay?” she knew immediately which direction the album was going in.
Moroney is currently an opener on Kenny Chesney’s Sun Goes Down Tour and is playing stadiums for the first time. She shared that she’s learned a lot because Chesney’s team is very organized and knows what they are doing. For her, being on tour with him is the best summer ever. She revealed that when she’s on the road she eats a lot of frozen meals so she’s getting enough protein and if she didn’t have those meals, she would just eat rolls all day. To treat herself, after every Saturday stadium show, she’ll eat a hot dog that they have cooking on a grill backstage. Moroney is known for her collection of sparkly dresses and cowboy boots when she goes on stage and shared, she has about 10 of the same dress in different colors that she’ll rotate through for each show. She did admit that if the weather is too hot where she’s playing, she’ll perform in a more casual look like shorts and a t-shirt, so she doesn’t ruin the dresses.
The new Twisters movie is accompanied by a star-studded soundtrack that Moroney is part of. She wrote the song “Never Left Me” for it without ever seeing the movie. She was just given a prompt and started working on ideas to pitch. Moroney jokingly tried to shoot her shot with the star of the Twisters movie, Glen Powell with a Tweet asking him to call her. When she saw him in the movie Anyone But You, she thought he was very good looking so she Tweeted that but wasn’t serious about, unless he did call, then she would’ve picked up!
