Amy shared details from a long day spent at the state track championships at the University of Tennessee, where her son Stevenson competed in the 4x800 relay.
The event lasted for hours, something she's realizing is common for track meets. Amy joked that despite attending many meets, she and her ex-husband still arrived unprepared for the heat while experienced track parents came equipped with umbrellas, fans, coolers, and shade gear. Stevenson's race did not take place until much later in the day. They had to keep moving back and forth between the bleachers and shaded areas while repeatedly thinking the race was about to begin, only to wait even longer.
Stevenson and his relay teammates ultimately finished fourth in the state. Amy said the boys were proud of their accomplishment but disappointed because they ran about seven seconds slower than their best team time. She noted that each runner was slightly off pace and suggested the heat may have played a factor. Amy also questioned a coaching decision to change the relay order during the championship meet. She said Stevenson normally runs first but was moved to the second position. According to Amy, some of the runners felt pressure about competing in the fourth spot of the relay lineup. Despite his disappointment, Amy was proud of the team and their performance. Stevenson, who is currently in eighth grade, will move on to high school competition next season.
The show also revisited Amy driving solo to the event. Stevenson rode with his father because it was his father’s scheduled parenting week, leaving her to make the nearly three-hour trip alone both ways. She stopped at Buc-ee's on the drive home and listened to an audiobook through Audible, joking that she still calls them “books on tape.”
