Show Debates if Amy Is by Definition a “Single Mom”

Amy is divorced and has two kids, but recently she's been getting people suggesting she's a "single mom." So Bobby asked the room if Amy should be identified as a single mom.

Eddie initially answered yes, explaining that Amy is single and also a mom, which led him to respond quickly without overthinking it. After reconsidering, Eddie changed his answer and said Amy was not a single mom because she co-parents with her ex-husband and shares custody. Lunchbox agreed with the second half of Eddie's sentiment, saying that a single parent is someone handling everything alone without involvement from the other parent. Nothing that Amy’s ex is actively involved in their children’s lives, so he would not consider her a single mom. Amy agreed with the guys and shared that she had recently been referred to as a single mom several times. She had not thought much about the label until recently because she personally does not identify as a single mom due to having a co-parent.

Amy said she believes the definition may depend on percentages and how involved the other parent is. Some parents may only see their children occasionally, which could make the primary caregiver feel more like a single parent. However, she clarified that her own situation does not fit that description. Bobby pointed out that Amy is single and is also a mom, but said he still views her situation differently because her ex-husband remains involved.

The conversation then shifted to Bobby’s childhood. Bobby considers his own mother a single mom because his father was mostly absent from his upbringing. His father moved away so Bobby primarily lived with his mother full-time, although his father did provide some financial support and occasional visits. Amy she still considers Bobby’s mother a single mom because she handled the daily responsibilities of raising him. Bobby recalled the sacrifices his mother made after his father left, explaining that she went from being a stay-at-home mom to working full-time while continuing to care for her children. Though, Bobby questioned whether his mother still counted as a single mom when his grandmother lived with them and helped raise him. Eddie argued that Bobby’s mother was still a single mom despite having support in the household.
