Amy’s Son Was Offered a Ride by a Stranger While Running

Amy's teenage son Stevenson recently had an unexpected encounter while out on a run during a rainy day.

According to Amy, Stevenson got home from his run and told her that a man driving a small SUV had stopped and asked if he needed a ride home. Stevenson declined the offer and continued running. Her son found the interaction unusual because he had never experienced anything like it before. Having always been taught not to accept rides from strangers, he immediately said no and moved on. While Amy said he was not shaken up by the experience, he did ask her if she thought the situation was strange. Bobby offered a different perspective, pointing out that Stevenson is a tall teenager who could easily be mistaken for a young adult. He suggested that the driver may have simply seen someone running in the rain and wanted to help. Amy acknowledged that possibility but questioned whether she would ever stop to offer a ride to a teenager. She said the situation felt weird from her perspective, even if the driver's intentions may have been innocent.

The discussion shifted to whether the interaction should be considered a case of "stranger danger." Bobby argued that the circumstances were different from a young child being approached by a stranger. He noted that Stevenson is 15-years-old, tall for his age, and was clearly dressed for exercise. Amy shared that Stevenson had intentionally gone out to run in the rain and was waiting at a crosswalk when the driver approached him. Bobby suggested that from the driver's viewpoint, it may have appeared that Stevenson was stuck outside in bad weather and trying to get home. Amy said that while she usually tries to see the good in people, her initial reaction was to wonder why an adult would stop and offer a ride to a teenager regardless. Bobby thought that if someone had malicious intentions, they would likely target a more vulnerable person than a tall, athletic teenage boy.

Amy asked the rest of the show whether any of them would stop to offer a ride to a stranger caught in the rain. Most said they probably would not, though Lunchbox admitted that under certain circumstances he might consider it, depending on the situation.
