Should Dads Watch the Birth? Bobby Bones Show Weighs In

Amy shared that friends of hers are expecting their first child and recently asked for advice about whether the husband should watch the baby being born.

She explained that the expectant mother doesn't mind either way, but her husband has been going back and forth on whether he wants to watch the delivery. Bobby said he would encourage anyone who is even slightly interested in watching the birth to do it. Although he chose not to watch when his own child was born, he said that decision was simply based on personal preference. He compared it to other things he doesn't enjoy, saying childbirth wasn't something he wanted to see. During the delivery, he stayed as high up near his wife's head as possible and never looked toward the actual birth. Even so, he believes friends who did watch found it to be an incredible experience, and he would still recommend doing it if there's even a small desire to see it.

Eddie said both of his children were delivered by C-section and advised against looking during that type of procedure. He admitted that he accidentally glanced over the surgical curtain once and saw something he wished he hadn't. After that experience, he intentionally kept his eyes focused away from the surgery. He also recalled that doctors offered his wife a mirror so she could watch, but she declined because she didn't want to see the procedure. Amy said her friend also has no interest in watching the birth with a mirror.

Scuba Steve watched all three of his children's births. He described his first child's C-section as one of the coolest experiences of his life, even though it was shocking to see the realities of surgery. He said the second birth was a traditional delivery, which he also watched. For the birth of their third and final child, he asked if he could catch the baby himself, but the medical team instead allowed him to participate in part of the delivery process. He also encouraged his wife to watch their third child's birth using a mirror. Although she was hesitant at first, he reminded her it was their last child and encouraged her to see what her body had accomplished. Afterward, she was glad she had watched and didn't regret it. Looking back, Scuba Steve said it's amazing to think about everything involved in childbirth now that their youngest child has grown older.

Amy said she would report back to her friends that the overwhelming advice from the dads on the show was to watch the birth if there's any interest.
