Eddie Grounded His Sons Over Something They Didn't Say
Eddie found himself at the center of a parenting debate after his four sons forgot what he considers one of the most important lessons he's taught them: always say "thank you."
The moment happened while Eddie and his family were walking into a building. A police officer saw them coming, opened the door, and held it for the entire group. According to Eddie, his boys walked straight through without saying a word.
"They acted like they were supposed to have the door opened for them," Eddie said.
That didn't sit well with him.
Eddie immediately stopped his sons and reminded them to thank the officer. While they eventually did, he still felt like the lesson hadn't landed. So when the family got home, the boys were assigned a full day of chores.
The punishment included mowing the yard, edging, folding laundry, and matching socks.
For Eddie, it wasn't about the fact that the person holding the door was a police officer. It was about showing appreciation to anyone who goes out of their way to do something kind.
"If it was an old lady holding the door, say thank you," he explained.
The story sparked a lively debate in the studio.
Amy understood why Eddie was upset and admitted this punishment seemed pretty reasonable compared to some of his past parenting methods. The show reminded listeners about the time Eddie made one of his sons repeatedly sing Man in the Mirror after making a poor decision, as well as the infamous baloney sandwich phase tied to school grades.
Compared to those punishments, Amy thought this one was fairly tame.
Lunchbox disagreed.
He argued that forgetting to say thank you one time didn't justify turning an entire day into a chore marathon.
"You want your kids to hate you?" he joked.
But Eddie wasn't backing down. He explained that his sons weren't being punished for a single mistake. The real issue was that he'd taught this lesson countless times before, and they still ignored it in the moment.
By the end of the conversation, the show remained split on whether Eddie's response was appropriate or over the top.
One thing everyone agreed on, though: if someone holds the door open for you, saying "thank you" takes almost no effort and goes a long way.
